Barra Lodge is one of the top holiday destinations on the mainland coast of Mocambique. The resort offers plenty to do including scuba diving, snorkelling and quad biking. 7km of unspoilt coastline offers ample opportunity to explore. Just behind the resort is a Mangrove Swamp allowing passengers a unique glimpse into this fascinating eco-system. Nearby Inhambane has much historical interest being the second oldest inhabited settlement in Mocambique. Craft goods, cashew nuts and the infamous palm wine are normally available.
Maputo formerly the Portuguese city of Lourenco Marques, is the capital of Mocambique. The city is dotted with areas of interest including the Casa do Ferro (house of Iron) was designed by Alexandre Eiffel (of Eiffel Tower fame). Maputo is renowned for its seafood and excellent restaurants can be found throughout the city in particular against the sandy shoreline. Maputo will be remembered by many for the gracious Polana Hotel, now the Polana Hotel and Casino. US Dollars and SA Rands are readily accepted. Lunch is served on board.
Mocambique Island is a World Heritage Site and offers the visitor a glimpse into Mocambique’s Portuguese colonial past.
Mocambique Island, once the capital of Mocambique houses the Southern Hemisphere’s oldest Christian Church along with other fascinating historical sites including the Fort of San Sabastian (which took over 100 years to build) and the Palace of San Paolo. Quaint restaurants are dotted all over the island offering local seafood delights and cool refreshments. Lunch is served on board. Locals generally accept US Dollars.
Please note that this landing requires you to wear closed shoes to prevent injury from Sea urchins and sharp stones. Swimming off the beach is not recommended.
Portuguese Island is an uninhabited island offering a glimpse into island life as nature intended. A short optional transfer to the neighbouring Island of Inhaca allows you to visit a local village premier resort hotel, bars, restaurants and souvenir merchants. An optional Beach BBQ is offered on Portuguese Island depending on weather conditions. Locals will accept US Dollars and some (not all) take Rands. Anakoa & Nosy Ve Nosy Ve, previously a home to pirates, is an uninhabited pristine island located off the south west coast of Madagascar.
Surrounded by azure seas, the coral reefs are the perfect playground for tropical fish, making the snorkelling and diving here as good as you will find anywhere. The rare Red-Tailed Tropic Bird uses Nosy Ve as a nesting ground and shares their home with ground tortoises and hermit crabs. Nearby on the mainland, the village of Anakao is a typical Malagasy fishing community surviving almost exclusively on the whims of the ocean. Here you can watch locals fishing from their colourful dhows. Don’t forget to sample the famous Three Horse Beer and the infamous locally produced fruit rum. US Dollars are accepted. Lunch is served on board.
