Economy

Austrian embarked on a cabin modernisation and refurbishment of its long haul fleet in 2013. The economy cabin now features modern, slim line seats in sleek, eye catching colours of charcoal and red. The Boeing 777 fleet features a 3-4-3 layout which reduces the overall width of the seat, however leg room as measured by seat pitch comes in at an industry average of 31-32 inches.

While seat width on the 767 fleet is slightly more generous, leg room measures in at a paltry 30 inches, a measurement of close proportions for anyone on the taller side.

Guests who would like additional leg room may reserve an exit row seat for 70 Euros per flight segment. This service is available on long-haul flights only and may be reserved up to 36 hours in advance. For 50 Euros, guests may also book the first row of economy class which, along with the exit rows, provide enhanced leg room.

Entertainment: Personal entertainment is provided by 9 inch TV screens located in the back of each seat. The on-demand entertainment system features hours of current and classic movies and TV shows as well as general interest programming. There are no power or USB ports in economy class.

Food & Beverage: A salty snack and beverage service is offered immediately after departure, followed by a complimentary hot meal and beverage service on long haul and medium haul international flights. For passengers with special meal requirements, Austrian provides a choice of 14 different meal options, ranging from bland, diabetic and gluten free to low sodium and lactose free. On short haul flights, there are a range of snacks available for purchase.

Business Class

Austrian’s long-haul business class features horizontal lie-flat beds. Seats come with a massage function and individual 15 inch (38cm) TV screens for over 100 hours of on-demand entertainment. Business Class guests also receive a comfort kit which contains useful items such as toothbrush and toothpaste, ear plugs, socks, eye mask and lotions. At your request, the cabin crew will fit your seat with bedding.

Business Class guests will enjoy sumptuous meals which are individually plated. Long-haul flights even feature a flying chef. The menu consists of soup and an appetiser, a choice of three mains, desserts and cheeses and a wide selection of beverages, wines and other alcoholic drinks.

Each business class seat comes equipped with individual power points for laptops and other personal devices.

Carry-on Baggage

Economy class passengers may bring one piece of cabin luggage on board and guests in business are allowed two. The maximum weight for each piece is 8kg and may not exceed 118cm (L+W+H). Folded garment bags are considered as one piece of carry-on baggage. An additional item such as a handbag, laptop bag or other small, strapped bag is also permitted as part of the cabin baggage allowance.

Anyone travelling with an infant under the age of 2 may bring one of the following in the cabin: baby basket, car seat or stroller/pram provided the item weighs less than 10kg.

Checked Baggage

Each passenger receives a free checked baggage allowance. The amount each guest receives depends on the class of travel and frequent flyer status. Refer to the baggage allowance chart when checking bags on an Austrian flight.

Austrian checked bag limits

Size limitations for carry-on bags are 55cm long x 40cm wide x 20cm high. Any item that exceeds these measurements must be checked in.

Sporting Equipment

Austrian recommends that any guest travelling with sports equipment contact the airline beforehand as acceptance of the item may depend on the space available. Such equipment or gear will be counted towards the free baggage allowance provided the item is within the size and weight limitations. Items outside such measurements may still travel however overweight or excess charges will apply.

One set of ski or snowboard equipment per person is permitted on Austrian flight free of charge except on flights to/from the USA and Canada. Guests must first contact the airline if travelling with ski equipment. Check with your Flight Centre consultant for regulations regarding other types of equipment.

Bulky Items

Restricted or Dangerous Goods

There are a number of items that are restricted from flying. Weapons, mace, beverages exceeding 70 percent alcohol and other flammable items are not allowed in carry-on baggage. Explosives, toxins, fireworks, infectious materials are also forbidden in checked luggage as are petrol powered tools and machinery. Lithium batteries such as those found in laptops are not allowed in checked luggage. The carrying of potentially harmful materials on an aircraft is unlawful and any such action may result in a fine and imprisonment, so it is always best to check in advance on regulations around dangerous goods.

If in doubt, leave it out. Even if you accidentally take a dangerous good on board an aircraft you can be fined and penalised.

Check-in

Airport check-in is always available at the Austrian Airlines ticket counter and there are separate lines devoted to Economy and Business travellers. Self-service kiosks are also available at Vienna and key European and international destinations. Passengers can select their seat, select the number of bags for check-in and print off boarding passes at the kiosk.

Web and Mobile Check-in

Web check-in is available 36 hours before departure and up to the check-in cut off time which varies depending on the airport. Check-in normally closes 1-2 hours before departure. To use this convenient option, guests must log on to the Austrian website or mobile app and enter their six digit reservation number. Boarding passes can then be printed or saved electronically on a mobile device such as a smart phone or tablet.

Guests with bags to check need only proceed to the bag drop off counter before proceeding to the gate. Web and mobile check-in may not be available for all flights or bookings.

Lounges

Business Class passengers as well as those with elite frequent flyer status with Austrian or other Star Alliance member have access to hundreds of lounges worldwide. These quiet, relaxing spaces provide a comfortable retreat away from the crowds and noise of bustling international terminals. Passengers on a business class ticket or those with elite frequent flyer status will have access to one of the following lounges – Austrian Business Lounge, Austrian Senator Lounge or a Star Alliance Gold Lounge. In most cases a companion may accompany the passenger into the lounge.

Miles and More

The Austrian Miles and More frequent flyer program is free to join. Once a member, the guest will earn mileage points for every Austrian, Star Alliance or partner airline flight taken. Points are also earned when staying at a partner hotel or using a car rental company within the program.

There are four levels to the program: Miles and More Member, Frequent Traveller, and the two elite tiers, Senator and HON Circle Member. Accrued points with the base membership level remain active for 36 months. The top three levels have no expiry date on miles earned. There is also a twenty-five percent mileage bonus for the top three tier levels.
