Mozambique can easily be seen as one of the most beautiful spots in the world. What makes it even more appealing, is knowing it’s so close to South Africa! If you decide to fly to Inhambane, a simple two-hour flight from OR Tambo airport means you’ll get to land and still get the most out of your day. The question is, where do you go from there, and why should Inhambane be so high on the list of places for you to visit? We’ve got the full scoop.
Fun in Inhambane
Inhambane, pronounced “Inyambaan”, has one of the liveliest atmospheres in Mozambique and is known for its vibey night-life and general buzz, no matter the time of day. The city is conveniently close to its airport as well as the harbour, where you can watch dhows while enjoying a sundowner, and has quickly established itself as one of the major centres for Mozambique. Shops and markets will ensure you can still get your retail fix if you can’t imagine a holiday without a purchase to remember it by, and sidewalk cafés are the perfect place to stop when you’re in the mood for a pastry or a delicious cup of coffee. If you’re a bit of a history buff, interesting sites include the Cathedral of Our Lady of Conception, the Governor's House, the Museum and of course the Central Market. There are also game parks and reserves in the area if you’re hoping to see some wildlife, or you can join a 4x4 trip along the coast over the Tropic of Capricorn (and stopping by this sign makes for a pretty great Instagram picture).
Bring on the Beach
One of the few North-facing beaches in Mozambique, Inhambane offers protection from currents, meaning that calm waters means you won’t emerge out of the water with a bikini top around your neck. The calm waters also make for a squeaky-clean beach, where you can spend your day sunning yourself and soaking up the sun. The beaches are lined with palm trees and look like something straight out of a Hollywood movie about Spring Break, of course offering the perfect backdrop to all the Snapchat stories you’ll be sharing. Inhambane is also one of the most famous places in the world for seeing manta ray and whale sharks, among other beautiful marine life, so a snorkel should definitely be on the cards. The bay is also one of the few areas in southern Mozambique where Dugong can be seen (and these guys should definitely appear on your bucket list of cute creatures to see).
All the fun isn't to be had on shore. Inhambane is a watersport haven, and Tofo Beach near Inhambane has phenomenal surfing spots. Barra Peninsula offers some of the most beautiful beaches in Mozambique and is home to another famous estuary. The Linga Linga Peninsula also has beautiful beaches and an estuary, although it’s only accessible by boat (which is a fun little outing on its own).
