Nairobi is Kenya’s capital and also the most populous city, and for many good reasons too. The city’s name means “cool water” after the Nairobi river that flows through it. Nairobi is also known as the Green City in the Sun as there’s a variety of greenery, from tropical rainforest flora to those more commonly found on the savannah.

Nairobi National Park allows you to go on safari without really leaving the city! It’s 8km South of the city centre, and it was the first of Kenya’s national parks. It’s home to a variety of wildlife, including the black rhino, big cats like leopards, lions and cheetahs, and zebra, giraffe, and buffalo. It’s also a birdwatcher’s paradise with several hundred species to try and spot (don’t forget the binoculars). You can stay over at the park or take a day trip for a hike or picnic (or both).

Do you want a bird’s eye view of the city? Then, head to the famous landmark building, Kenyatta International Convention Centre, where you can take in the 360-degree view from the 30th floor.

Enjoy a few of Nairobi’s arts and culture at The Alchemist, a lively venue known for its bar, as well as music, food, and fashion. For excellent Kenyan coffee in a chilled environment, visit Connect café, where the baristas will give you personalised recommendations.
