Romance can mean different things to different people, but few can resist the allure of a romantic escape for two. While there's no wrong answer when it comes to romance, some of the world’s most beautiful spots are situated right in our own backyard in this beautiful country and lend themselves to catering to couples. So, whether you're planning a birthday surprise for your loved one, have an anniversary coming up, or a weekend getaway just because these are our top picks for the most romantic getaways in South Africa for a couple’s weekend.

What are the most romantic parts of South Africa?

The southernmost part of the African continent is certainly blessed with many great weekend hot spots. From a bushveld hideaway to a secluded forest cabin, or to a mountain retreat or a seaside villa; whatever the case, you are guaranteed solitude, adventure and fun while creating memories that will last a lifetime!

But finding the ideal location isn't always that easy because every couple has their own specific needs, so our travel experts have searched far and wide for romantic hotels in a variety of destination areas and listed them below (in alphabetical order) to help with making the choice easier for you.

  • · Dullstroom, Mpumalanga Province
  • · Franschhoek, Cape Town
  • · Free State, Heart of South Africa
  • · Garden Route, Wild Coast, Western Cape
  • · Kwazulu-Natal Province
  • · Limpopo, Province
  • · Magaliesburg, Gauteng
  • · Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape
  • · Swaziland (Eswatini)

Dullstroom, Mpumalanga Province

Dullstroom is known as the “Gem of Mpumalanga” and is clearly one of the most romantic destinations in South Africa.  It is close to the Panorama Route area featuring magnificent views of landscapes such as the Blyde River Canyon, the historical gold rush town of Pilgrim's Rest and the fascinating Echo and Sudwala caves.  The area is famous for its fly fishing experiences, laid-back farming atmosphere, still lakes and wonderful fresh air.

Kwazulu-Natal Province

Kwazulu Natal is the perfect destination for couples looking for relaxation.  Breathe in the fresh sea air, take walks along the beach, bathing your feet in the warm Indian Ocean as it laps the shoreline.  Enjoy a glass of wine or two on your patio as you watch the sun setting spectacularly over the ocean horizon. The coastal village of St. Lucia is popular and has a wide range of accommodation options.   Further inland the lovely village of Nottingham Road is to be found, while the Drakensberg Mountain range abounds with wonderful tranquil destinations, especially in the Underberg/Himeville areas.

Franschhoek, Cape Town

Franschhoek, in a word, is “beautiful”.  This quaint town is about 80 kilometres from Cape Town (which in itself boasts a huge variety of tranquil destinations – especially along the seacoast) and is set in the Winelands and the area brings provincial France to mind.  Do a bit of wine farm hopping and enjoy tasting the various wines produced in the valley using the Franschhoek hop-on-hop-off wine tram.  The peace and the charm of the town make it one of the best weekend romantic destinations any couple could ask for.

Free State, Heart of South Africa

Most of the topography of the Free State is boringly flat.  However, the east of the province is entirely different.  The east has towering mountain peaks that are snow-capped in winter, rolling green hills, deep gorges, sheer cliffs, crystal clear mountain streams and stunning scenery.  The Golden Gate national park, the quaint village of Clarens and the Fouriesburg Cherry Festival are all highlights in this area.  If you had never thought of the Free State as a romantic destination, think again!

Garden Route, Wild Coast, Western Cape

The Garden Route as a whole is one of the most romantic getaways in South Africa.  If you are looking for an ultra-romantic getaway, the Garden Route’s attractions such as the Cango caves, Robberg Nature Reserve, Plettenberg Bay, Knysna and Tsitsikamma abound.  Tucked away in the most scenic forestation possible, secluded lodges lie hidden amongst the giant Outeniqua Yellow Wood trees while the spectacular coastline with its amazing beaches and coves is dotted with every type of accommodation imaginable.  As a bonus, you can taste the freshest oysters while visiting Knysna.

Limpopo Province, Far North

The Limpopo Province is rich in biodiversity.  From soaking your tired bodies in invigorating hot water mineral baths to relaxing in one of the Kruger National Park's cottages or private bush camps is perhaps the perfect getaway for city-jaded couples.  There are canopy tours, fly fishing and restaurants with amazing vistas overlooking indigenous forests to be enjoyed.

Magaliesburg, Rustenburg

Just a short drive from Johannesburg is the scenic village of Magaliesburg, situated at the foot of the Magaliesberg mountain range.  In the area, accommodation ranges from basic self-catering to up-market lodges and exclusive private game reserves.  The resort of Sun City with its various attractions isn't far away, and there is of course the Pilanesberg Game Reserve adjoining Sun City.  On the way to Magaliesburg are the world-famous Sterkfontein Caves and the Cradle of Humankind exhibition area.

Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha), Eastern Cape

Known in some circles as the beginning of the Garden Route, the environs of this city have much to offer couples seeking a romantic weekend getaway.  It has lovely white sandy beaches and some great attractions, such as its aquarium (Bayworld) and its waterfront (Boardwalk), several game reserves (e.g., Addo Elephant Park and Kragga Kamma) and some private ones with exclusive accommodations and the Sunday River Cruise.  Just a short drive down the coast is Jeffrey's Bay with its world-class surfing, beautiful beaches and shell collecting.

Swaziland (Eswatini)

Now let's take a road trip across our border and visit ESwatini.  It may be a small country but within its borders, it has an array of scenic destinations that will get any romantic heart fluttering!  Swaziland is basically covered in rugged mountains and boasts some truly amazing and exclusive resorts with breathtaking views.  Its Royal Swazi Spa with its golf course continues to attract visitors worldwide.  Eswatini is within easy reach by car and as a destination for a romantic getaway, it ticks all the boxes.
