South Africa’s capital city of Pretoria is more than just a little sister to Joburg. It’s an exciting destination for families with a friendly, laidback atmosphere. For locals or visitors, Pretoria has a good mixture of outdoor fun, cultural experiences, and kid-friendly activities.

If you’re planning a trip to the Jacaranda City, or just want a different way to spend your weekends, here are our favourite kid-friendly attractions, activities, and things to do in Pretoria.

Experience Farm Life at Irene Dairy Farm

If your family loves the charm of farm life, a visit to Irene Dairy Farm is a must. Kids can see dairy cows being milked, explore the farmyard, and enjoy the fresh air. The on-site dairy shop sells fresh farm milk and delicious homemade treats, making it the perfect spot to pick up a few goodies.

There are two restaurants on the farm offering hearty meals with a countryside view, and plenty of open space for little ones to run around and enjoy the fresh farm atmosphere. Head out for lunch on any Saturday or Sunday, and you’ll see kids playing in the fountains, running around on the grass, and timidly reaching out to pet a dairy cow or calf.

Enjoy a Day in Nature at Pretoria National Botanical Garden

Take a break from the hustle and bustle at the Pretoria National Botanical Garden, a peaceful oasis in the city. With lush green lawns, beautiful trees, and scenic walking trails, it’s a wonderful spot for a relaxed family outing.

Enjoy a picnic under the shade of the trees, explore the various gardens showcasing indigenous flora, and let the kids burn off some energy while parents enjoy the serenity of nature. The garden also features two restaurants for those wanting a light meal after a walk – or a walk after a heavy meal!

Shop and Dine at Family-Friendly Markets

Pretoria’s markets are a big feature of the city, and give you a taste of that ‘smaller town’ feel. There are a few standout markets where visitors can find delicious food, artisanal goods, and entertainment. There are often jungle gyms and play areas too, making them perfect for a family-friendly outing. Some of the best markets to explore include:

  • Hazel Food Market – Held every Saturday, this market offers fresh produce, gourmet treats, and a dedicated play area for kids. Parents can browse a variety of food stalls while children enjoy the jungle gym and jumping castle. The food is some of the best in the city and spans everything from cheeses and cured meats to freshly pressed juices, shawarmas, curries, and baked treats.
  • Cowhouse Market – Located in Hazeldean, this market features a great selection of food stalls, craft beers, and live music. It’s a pet-friendly spot with a covered play area, pony rides, and a cycle track for children to enjoy. It’s also right next to the Hazeldean Brewery, where you can stop for a craft beer, and has plenty of mountain biking trails for the more active marketgoers.
  • Market @ The Sheds – An inner-city market in Pretoria CBD that blends art, music, and delicious food. Held on the last Saturday of each month, it’s a lively experience for the whole family with plenty of creative workshops and live performances.
