If you’ve ever wondered, “Where is Seville in Spain?” you’re not alone. Nested in the southern region of Andalusia, is often considered one of Spain’s best-kept secrets. It’s one of the warmest places in Spain, and you’ll find this captivating city in the southern part of the country, about a two-hour drive inland from the Costa del Sol and a two-hour train trip south of Madrid.

Seville is the capital of the Andalusia region and the fourth-largest city in Spain. Despite that, it still retains plenty of old-world charm with a really large historical centre which is totally walkable. You probably won’t even need to take public transport for the time you’re there!

What Can You Do in Seville?

Whether you’re a history buff, a foodie, or just someone looking to soak in the sun, Seville has something for everyone. It’s home to flamenco, incredible food, lots of history, and plenty of day trips too.

Here are some of the top things to do in Seville and its surrounds that will make your visit unforgettable. You can find great deals on flights to Seville via KLM and Air France, and start planning your adventure right away.

1. Explore the Majestic Seville Cathedral and La Giralda

No visit to Seville is complete without stepping inside the Seville Cathedral, the largest Gothic cathedral in the world. This UNESCO World Heritage site is awe-inspiring, with its intricate architecture and the tomb of Christopher Columbus. Don’t miss the chance to climb La Giralda, the bell tower that offers panoramic views of the city. It’s a long walk but thanks to ramps instead of steps, the climb is surprisingly gentle, making it accessible to most visitors.

2. Wander Through the Alcázar of Seville

The Royal Alcázar of Seville is one of the best sights to see during your trip to Seville. This royal palace, still in use today, is a stunning example of how Seville is home to a mixture of Arabic and European architecture. A tour here will give you loads of insights to the merging of different cultures over centuries, and how the city came to be. It’s also a beautiful place to escape the Sevillian heat, with ornate arches, wall tapestries, and delicate mosaic tilework to admire. Make sure you leave plenty of time to explore the gardens, which have existed since the late Middle Ages. It’s now home to more than 170 plant species plants from all corners of the world across a sprawling 60,000 metre-square space.

3. Stroll Along the Picturesque Barrio Santa Cruz

Once the Jewish quarter, Barrio Santa Cruz is one of Seville’s most charming neighbourhoods and smack bang in the centre of the old town. Its narrow, winding streets are filled with whitewashed houses, vibrant flower boxes, and cozy tapas bars. It’s the perfect place to get lost for a few hours, discovering hidden plazas and indulging in some of the city’s best food. Speaking of food, don’t miss out on tasting authentic Andalusian tapas—think jamón ibérico, gazpacho, and fried fish. Washed down with an ice cold beer or a tinto verano (Andalucia’s take on sangria), of course!

4. Experience Flamenco in Its Birthplace

Seville is the birthplace of flamenco, and there’s no better place to experience this passionate dance than in one of the city’s many flamenco bars. Head to a traditional tablao to witness a performance that will leave you breathless. The combination of music, dance, and raw emotion is something you won’t soon forget. To make sure you don’t miss out on this cultural experience, you’ll want to book tickets a few days in advance. Try to find somewhere that locals leave good review of!

5. Take a Relaxing Cruise on the Guadalquivir River

For a different perspective of the city, consider taking a cruise along the Guadalquivir River. This historic river played a key role in Spain’s exploration of the New World, and today, it offers a peaceful way to see some of Seville’s top landmarks, including the Torre del Oro and the Triana district. It’s the perfect way to unwind after a day of sightseeing. River cruises truly are some of the best ways to see Europe’s cities!

6. Indulge in Tapas

Spain is famous for tapas, and it’s definitely a local custom you should adopt while you’re there. The main meal is lunch time, and you’ll normally eat a multi-course menu then. But don’t worry, dinner only starts after 9pm! Hop from bar to bar or restaurant and order one tapa at each spot to do it the way the locals do. There’s food galore in Seville, but Triana neighbourhood boasts some of the best and most authentic tapas, as a local, working-class area.

7. Shop for Ceramics

Triana is also Seville’s ceramics district. You’ll want to put a morning aside to visit the famous ceramics shops to buy souvenirs or things for your kitchen. It’s tempting to come back with a suitcase full of plates, bowls, and serving platters and honestly….we wouldn’t judge you for it. Three of the best are Santa Ana ceramics, Ceramica Triana, and Ceramica Ruiz.
