Cape Byron walking track is a mostly paved walkway trail winding through beautiful bush land and rainforest, along cliff tops and the ocean below. This lovely trail leads to the eastern most point in Australia and features an historic light house and some of the most stunning coastal views found anywhere in Australia.
Meandering through subtropical bushland this walk immerses visitors in the local flora where extensive bird life can also be seen. Continuing up the trail the lighthouse stands impressively at the top of the cape. The lighthouse was built in 1901 and the historic cottages and light keeper’s house now make up a gift shop with refreshments.
The view from the top of the cape is spectacular and marine life such as dolphins and whales can often be seen. Between the months of May and October, hump-back whales pass through these waters during the winter migration period as they head north to warmer waters to give birth to their calves.
Cape Byron Walking Track can be accessed at many points. The easiest method is driving up Lighthouse Road to the car park near the top of the cap and the lighthouse. The trail can then be accessed from here with visitors continuing at their leisure and experiencing as much of the trail as they would like.
