This impressive national memorial for Australia’s armed forces is a solemn tribute to all those who fought and died in Australian wars. Informative exhibits, touching memorials and fascinating museum displays all form to create a site of national significance, solemn tribute as well as a detailed look into Australia’s wartime past and its place in history.
The interesting exhibits are arranged by conflict, from European settlement to the Boar War, proceeding to the First and Second World Wars and continue with conflicts from 1945 to the present. Aircraft Hall contains several classic aircraft and the fascinating exhibit Air Power in the Pacific, 1941-53.
Getting to the War Memorial is best done by taking Parkes Way and turning onto Anzac Parade. This route offers a head-on view of the impressive memorial and makes for a lovely and picturesque approach. Once at the memorial look back for beautiful unobstructed views back down Anzac Parade, toward Lake Burley Griffin and all the way to Parliament House. The Memorial grounds also include a lovely sculpture garden on the west side of the building.
ACTION buses operate regular services from the CBD to the Memorial on routes 10 during the week and 910 on weekends. Free guided tours of the galleries are conducted daily and go for approximately 90 minutes.
