This impressive neo-gothic cathedral is Sao Paulo’s largest church and is located in the heart of the city. Towering spears grace the sky overlooking the tree lined Praca da Sè or Sè Square where church history dates back over 400 years. This cathedral square was the site of two other churches, both demolished to make way for its larger successor.
Construction of this grand cathedral started in 1913 and with close to 800 tons of marble used in its building, took almost 40 years to complete. The impressive nave consists of five aisles and features a decorative dome. Its Latin cross design can accommodate 8,000 worshipers and interior decorative works include a high alter fixture with decorative elements painted in the colours of the Brazilian flag. Another famous feature is the sculpted figures of Brazil’s diverse flora and fauna that are located throughout the church.
The stained glass windows are another stunning feature of the church as are lovely Italian mosaics. Divine sounds can be heard emanating from the cathedral too. Over 60 bells are contained within the beautiful towers that are easily visible from outside on Cathedral Square while the Italian made organ consisting of 12,000 pipes fills the church with lovely music.
The cathedral and Praca da Sè is considered to be the main central point of the city. To reach the area by public transport, take the Metro Line 1 to the Sè Station.
