With more than a century of art and culture under its belt, the Royal Ontario Museum is one of the largest and most impressive museums in North America.
Its 40 galleries of art, archaeology and natural science are home to more than six million individual objects, including impressive installations from an age when dinosaurs roamed the earth.
The galleries of the Royal Ontario Museum range from the Bronze Age to Ancient Greece, where Western culture finds its roots, to the Roman Empire and, of course, a dedicated display honouring the First Peoples of Canada.
In addition to permanent galleries such as Earth's Treasures, which features more than 4.5 billion years of geological history and thousands of rare minerals, gems and meteorites, ROM contiually welcomes many acclaimed visiting exhibitions.
The entry to ROM is a masterpiece in itself. Made of glass and aluminium, The Crystal by Daniel Libeskind adds a modern facade to the Heritage building, jutting out like a kind of architectural iceberg.
Daily tours of the museum, including specific gallery and exhibition tours, are run by volunteers and are free with museum admission (currently $CAD17 for adults and $CAD14 for children).
Time your family visit in with ROM Big Weekends, where special activities are held for one weekend each month, or ROM Friday Night Live in the Fall for 'eclectic eats, drinks, DJs, dancing, live music and unexpected experiences'.
If you're visiting with the kids in tow, the Royal Ontario Museum also features special hands-on galleries with interactive and touchable displays just for kids.
Friday evening is the best time to visit if you're on a budget, with general admission costs cut to $CAD10 after 4.30pm. The closest subway station to the Royal Ontario Museum is St. George Station, or Union Station if you're travelling on the GO Transit train.
