Located just steps from the palm shaded Plaza de Armas; this beautiful heritage listed building houses the Museum of Santiago and contains important paintings, antiques and objects from Santiago’s rich history. These important historical artefacts date from the pre-Hispanic indigenous era to the twentieth century. The museum’s impressive exhibition halls and inviting central courtyard commonly hold Chilean and international shows and performances which highlight visual arts, music, dance and theatre.
The Casa Colorada or Red House is a lovely two story stone structure built in 1769 and is a beautiful representation of Santiago’s rich colonial past. As the name suggests, it is known for its colourful deep red façade. Arched entryways and ornate ironed railings decorate the frontal balconies and the grey tiled roof is a lovely fixture that enhances the buildings impressively sound construction and compliments the building’s detailed white trim.
Casa Colorada is in one of Santiago’s most important and historic areas. Just a two minute walk from the historic Plaza de Armas, the house is close to other historically significant buildings including the Metropolitan Cathedral of Santiago, the Palacio de la Real Audiencia and one of the cities most beautiful buildings, the Correo Central (Central Post Office).
Casa Colorada can be reached by the city’s subway system. Line 1 serves the Plaza de Armas Station which is just one block away from the house. Upon exiting the station proceed through the Plaza de Armas and follow the street Compañia de Jesùs in the direction of one way traffic. The house is just steps away on the right hand side.
