There's beaches and then there's Matira Beach. Technically two beaches to either side of Bora Bora's southernmost tip, Matira Point, Matira Beach is one of the few beaches open to the public on the island. The tourist destination offers a convenient variety of shoreside resorts, shops, eateries and diversions for a full day at the beach.
Think pristine white sands lapped by an azure lagoon and framed by emerald-green hills and swaying palm trees and that's Matira Beach in a coconut shell. The popular public beach is a 1.6km stretch of sand that slopes gently down to a sandy-bottomed lagoon with clear, warm water. The family-friendly spot is ideal for swimming and snorkelling and the palm trees offer shade from the sun. During low tide, it is possible to wade from Matira Point to the reef. For a stunning sunset view, head here to climb the hill at Matira Point and watch the sun sink into the lagoon at dusk.
If you are looking for activities along the beach, nearby is the popular Bloody Mary's restaurant, bar and yacht club on the west side of Matira Point, which is famous for its sandy floor and thatched-roof hut at the beachside location. Bloody Mary's attracts famous faces and you can also enjoy the freshest wahoo fish and their signature drinks. The beach is also just a short stroll away from boutiques, informal snack bars, traditional tattoo artists and high-end resorts. On the east side of Matira Point on Pofai Bay you can see the world-famous overwater bungalows. Matira Point is also a great destination for kite surfing with regular strong breezes and calm water conditions in a protected bay.
To get to Matira Beach from Vaitape, it's an nine-minute drive by taxi, scooter or take Le Truck public transport service to Matira Point at the southern tip of Bora Bora.
