Although the Christchurch Arts Centre is closed during its extensive restoration project, the collection of historic buildings that make up this impressive complex must be seen for their wonderfully ornate Gothic Revival beauty. The Arts Centre consists of 23 separate buildings and all but one are listed by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust as buildings of great historical significance.
Quiet colonnades, vaulted entryways and ceilings and ornate trimmings make this a wonderfully pleasant collection of buildings to study and admire. The centre's buildings will be progressively opened as restoration focuses on the most historic structures first. The grounds and surrounding area are ripe for exploration too and is a relaxing environment for a quiet stroll.
As the work is completed, the Arts Centre looks to be the premier venue for arts and cultural related events such as exhibitions, performances and study while also promoting the broader cultural landscape of the city. Another goal is to promote New Zealand cinema and its production.
The Arts Centre is situated in a lovely area along Hagely Park and just across from the Botanical Gardens along the Avon River. The Arts Centre is near the Cultural Precinct and therefore easily accessible.
