Located in City Park near Denver’s Museum of Nature and Science, the Denver Zoo houses over 3,500 different animals featuring more than 650 species. From exotic African animals, primates, marine life and many other interesting animals, the Denver Zoo offers a close-up look at the world’s wildlife within realistic natural enclosures. As the zoo furthers its transformation process the site looks to become an ‘exciting conservation center’.
Founded in 1896 and owned and operated by the city of Denver, the 80-acre zoo has become one of the city’s top tourist attractions. Accredited by both the American and World Association of Zoos and Aquariums, it was the first zoo in the country to use natural settings for its enclosures rather than simple cages. The zoo was also an early participant in programs to save the endangered American bison from extinction and is active in other preservation areas.
The zoo features many interesting shows and demonstrations as well as scheduled feedings. Shows feature tropical lorikeets and other exotic birds, a sea lion show, the elephant passage demonstration as well as the Africa’s Greatest Predators show. Scheduled feedings take place for the African penguins and Red River Hogs. These are great opportunities to witness the animals in a unique setting and are a way for visitors to become better acquainted with the wildlife.
