Start out by taking a bite out of the 'Big Apple' before proceeding to head south along this iconic stretch of coast. You'll stop off in the nation's capital to explore the heritage and history of the US before proceeding on to Virginia Beach, North Carolina, Savannah and Florida.  A span of vibrant cities and world famous attractions are sure to inspire as you drive along America's east coast.

Day 1 & 2 - New York City to Washington DC

Arrive in the Empire State and spend the afternoon at leisure exploring the ‘Big Apple’s’ many iconic landmarks and famous haunts. Hit the road on day two, travelling 229 miles (368kms) as you make your way to Washington DC via the 'City of Brotherly Love'. Philadelphia offers up such historic highlights as the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall. With a Philly cheese steak in hand, it's back on the road to the nation's capital.

Day 3 - Washington DC

What better way to get into the spirit of America than an entire day dedicated to exploring Washington DC. The roots of American history can be felt throughout the city with countless national monuments and memorials to visit. Explore the vast collections of the Smithsonian Museums and visit the three houses of government.

Day 4 - Washington DC to Virginia Beach

Leaving 'The District' behind, travel 208 miles (335kms) to beautiful Virginia Beach. A stop in Richmond is a chance to marvel at the exquisite state capital (designed by Thomas Jefferson), while the Botanical Gardens satiate any inkling for natural splendour. The day's journey culminates in picturesque Virginia Beach.

Day 5 - Virginia Beach to North Carolina Outer Banks Area

Next up is the Outer Banks area of North Carolina. This 200 mile (320km) stretch of coast is known as the 'Graveyard of the Atlantic' thanks to narrow barrier islands that have claimed many ships. Visit Kill Devil Hills, birthplace of the Wright Brothers, or board a ferry at Cape Hatteras for a jaunt to Cedar Island and Ocracoke Island — the final resting place of 'Blackbeard' the pirate.

Day 6 - North Carolina Outer Banks Area to Myrtle Beach

Clocking up another 297 miles (478kms), iconic Myrtle Beach in South Carolina calls to beach bums the world over. Situated at the centre of a continuous stretch of beach knows as the "Grand Strand" this major centre of tourism is known for its warm, subtropical climate.

Day 7 - Myrtle Beach to Charleston

96 miles (154kms) to the south sits Charleston, the oldest and second largest city in South Carolina. This city is known for its rich history, preserved architecture, restaurant community and southern charm, all of which is abundantly represented in such highlights as shopping on King Street, Market Street and historic Fort Sumter.

Day 8 - Charleston to Savannah

Heading further into the heart of the south, your journey will take you 108 miles (173kms) to Savannah, Georgia. Be sure to stop at beautiful Beaufort to explore the Antebellum architecture. Then it's on to Savannah, which has developed a reputation as the ‘Hollywood of the South’, providing locations for such films as Forrest Gump and The Notebook. 

Day 9 - Savannah to Daytona Beach

Leave Georgia behind and head due south to the Sunshine State. This 229 mile (368km) leg will take you through St Augustine, which is the oldest city and port in the continental United States. Buckle up and proceed to Daytona Beach, which plays host to the famous Daytona 500.

Day 10 & 11 - Daytona Beach to Miami

Cruising down the A1A, Daytona Beach to Miami is a scenic 260 miles (419kms) packed with notable stops. From Cape Canaveral to Vero and Palm Beach (stomping grounds for such iconic American families as the Kennedys and Vanderbilts), it culminates in lavish Miami Beach. Experience the city's outdoor lifestyle, art deco architecture and extravagant culture. Along with its fine food and contagious nightlife, this is the place to see and be seen. Kick back on a patio café, lay on the beach or window shop the world famous boutiques of the Lincoln Street corridor.
