Those visiting Reno are blessed with a banquet of wilderness to explore. When it comes to skiing, Squaw - having once hosted the Winter Olympics - might be the most famous of the mountain peaks, but the closest resort to Reno is Mount Rose.
The highest mountain in Nevada's side of the Tahoe Basin, Mount Rose is a popular year-round destination for Renoites. Located only 30 minutes from the city's downtown, in warmer months the mountain is most popular with hikers.
Standing over 6,300 feet tall means the five-mile hike to the top will almost literally take your breath away. If it doesn't, the expansive views over Lake Tahoe definitely will. A family-friendly walk, it's still a wise idea to plan a rest en route. The waterfall located halfway up the mountain makes an ideal pit-stop.
Come winter, the emphasis turns to going down the mountain rather than up it. Skiers and snowboarders will rejoice on the many well-groomed trails and powder filled chutes. Just be wary if you're driving to the mountain to ski, as Mount Rose Ski Resort is actually on the slopes of Slide Mountain, located next to Mount Rose - not on Mount Rose itself. All is not lost if you do happen to take a wrong turn, because back over at Mount Rose you can get a snow fix by taking advantage of the free sledding and tobogganing area.
Though suitable for skiers of all skill levels, if you're a beginner or intermediate skier you'll really enjoy Mount Rose. As well as being more affordable than the LakeTahoe resorts, Mount Rose is also incredibly family friendly.
Before heading to the mountain, speak to your Flight Centre consultant about a special deal on lift passes and lessons. You'll find Mount Rose by taking the Nevada State Route 431 and following the signs, or by taking advantage of one of the shuttle buses that depart from many of Reno's casino hotels.
