Cruise Line Food: Then And Now

Seafaring travellers were once restricted to fixed dining times in the ship's grand dining room. Here, you could take your pick off a limited menu, or lose yourself in a buffet that lacked variety, freshness and destination-specific flair.

Now, your stomach need not be confined to harsh restrictions of set meal times. Want a burger at 2am? Too easy. Keen to sail into the sunset with an intimate supper club? Perhaps you'd prefer an afternoon tea bump of caviar, a chance to sample the flavours of South America for lunch or some Pan-Asian flair in a moody restaurant?

Whatever your tastes, cruise lines have listened to our calls and are ready and waiting to blow you away with some mouth-watering cuisine.

The cruise dining scene's major glow up means you can devour your holiday through the lens of your stomach. Take a hands-on cooking class, cruise through wine tastings, join food market tours, sample cuisine from Michelin-starred chefs and fill your belly with healthier, more interesting cuisine.

What dining options should I expect onboard a cruise?

While onboard, you'll find that most restaurants are included in the fare. Quite often, there will also be a few specialty restaurants that come at an extra cost. Our tip? Share the love and eat at as many different options as possible.

Specialty restaurants can range from bespoke Italian cuisine to steakhouses, Teppanyaki, gastronomic adventures, wine bars and more. The options are endless, and cruise lines have spared no expense to ensure guests have the best chance to sample flavours from across the globe.

Some cruise ships may also include a formal or themed night during the itinerary that encourages guests to dress up and join the captain for a meal in the main dining room.

Tip: If there is a particular venue you are bursting at the seams to try, make sure you book in advance to avoid missing out. Most ships are carrying hundreds, if not thousands, of guests, which means onboard restaurants tend to book out quickly.

Can I go on a cruise if I have dietary requirements?

Living your best plant-based life? Perhaps you and gluten don't go well together? If you have food allergies or dietary requirements, rest assured that you will not go hungry.

Just like dining on land, cruise ships go above and beyond to cater for every guest. In fact, Oceania, Regent Seven Seas and Avalon Waterways boast a wide array of plant-based dishes, while Cunard is known for their specialty vegetarian menu.
