Established in 1881 this impressive art museum houses a collection of 38,000 works of art and is host to many visiting exhibits each year. Welcoming close to one million visitors every year the museum is renowned for its indigenous art collection and British colonial art from the time of Australian settlement.
The impressive collection at this historic gallery includes not only paintings, prints, sculptures and drawings but also photographs, ceramics, textiles and metalwork from all over the world. The European collection includes pieces from the Renaissance to the present while beautiful works from North America and throughout Asia are also on display as well as the only dedicated Islamic gallery area in Australia.
The museum itself is a work of art and considered to be one of the most beautiful buildings in Adelaide. Built in 1900, this beautiful building was extended twice in the twentieth century and now includes modern exhibit space that does not take away from the Victorian beauty of the original structure. This is a most impressive gallery where one can learn about and enjoy art of all kinds.
While there may be a cost for certain exhibits, admission to the Art Gallery is free. Situated in the Cultural Precinct along North Terrace and just a short walk from the CBD the museum is easily accessible. The museum has a food, wine and gallery shop so that visitors may enjoy the whole day admiring their works.
