The National Gallery of Australia houses the country’s national collection of artwork as well as significant pieces from around the globe. With over 160,000 works in its permanent collection, this is Australia’s largest art museum.
The museum’s noteworthy Australian collection is a look back in time and encompasses the period from colonization with its European influence to the modern era, visibly illustrated through the increasingly diverse styles and cultural backgrounds of today. The Australian Impressionism Collection is particularly stunning.
The collection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art is of the highest artistic significance, works coming from a cultural tradition thousands of years old and representative of the people’s everyday life. The wonderful collection of European and American works dating from 1850 ranges from Impressionism and Post Impressionism to Abstract, Pop Art, Minimalism and includes a sculpture gallery.
This impressive gallery must of course be seen to be fully appreciated. The stunning works on display here have the ability to move and inspire and is a wonderful Australian fixture. Located in Parliamentary Triangle on the south side of Lake Burley Griffin it is within walking distance of old parliament house.
