If you’re a regular bon vivant, or what we might today call a “foodie”, then you will love Mercado Municipal. This popular gathering spot for Sao Paulo’s fresh food connoisseurs is located in a lovingly restored building from the late 1920s where food markets have been hosted ever since.
All kinds of fresh produce, local delights and gourmet dishes can be found at this extraordinary market as well as spices from around the world. The more than 12,000 square metre floor space also includes a ‘Gourmet Lounge’ where visitors can sample many of the fine foods on offer.
Even if you’re not interested in the foods or plan on shopping at the markets, it’s well worth the trip just to see the historic arcade that houses this daily food event. The historic building was completely restored in 2004 and features many fascinating architectural elements. The ornate exterior features lovely arched entryways, impressive domes and over 70 beautiful stained glass windows.
Located on Cantareira Street, Mercado can be reached on the subway’s blue line. Mercado is located between the Luz Station and Sao Bento Stations and to the east or towards the Tamanduateí River.
