This enlightening museum is the only one of its kind in the world; one dedicated solely to a language. The Portuguese language of course is highlighted here and visitors can learn about this old world vernacular, its history, literature and development in many interesting ways. With its cultural exhibits and interactive displays, any student of language or literature is sure to enjoy this interesting in-depth look at one of the world’s oldest languages.
Located in downtown Sao Paulo in the beautiful Victorian era Luz subway station, the museum houses two floors of exhibition space as well as an auditorium. One floor houses permanent exhibits dedicated to the history and development of the language and how Portuguese evolved as it moved into Brazil. The additional floor space houses temporary exhibits, taking a revealing look at the writers, literature and many other aspects of Portuguese.
The Luz Subway Station, where the museum is housed is a historic building dating back to 1901. Its intricate clock tower and colourful façade are reminders of Brazil’s rich colonial past and as the city’s main railway station in its early days, the station conveyed a sense of glamour and beauty.
Located in the heart of the city, the Luz Station is served by the subway’s blue line.
