It’s hard not to be impressed by the massive brick and stone building that houses the famous Pinacoteca Art Museum. Its imposing façade and columned sides are a suitable draw for a building that houses one of Brazils most important cultural sites. The historic museum building was built in 1900 with the establishment of the art museum as an entity in 1905.
Pinacoteca is known mostly for its impressive permanent collections of 18th century Brazilian paintings and sculptures and features a vibrant mix of notable modern Brazilian art as well. Significant European works are also on display including important paintings, sculptures and other art forms. Temporary exhibits are widely featured and include works covering many different themes and interests.
The inviting exhibit spaces are modern, bright and open and blend beautifully with the historic building that houses these wonderful art galleries. The museum also features an extensive book store and gift shop, highlighting the great works and exhibits found at Pinacoteca. To further enhance cultural awareness and foster a greater connection with the works presented at the museum, Pinacoteca features in-depth course studies.
The Pinacoteca is located directly in front of the Luz subway station on the blue line. From the green line riders should transfer at the Ana Rosa Station or at the Sè Station when transferring from the red line.
