Just a short boat ride across the stunning clear blue waters from Noumea is the pristine island getaway of Amedee with its historic, one-of-a-kind lighthouse and fantastic stretches of white sandy beaches. To top it off, this stunning little island is surrounded by New Caledonia’s rich and colourful barrier reef, making this the perfect destination for snorkelling or scuba diving.
Beautiful and charming, Amedee Island is situated about a 35-minute boat ride from the New Caledonian capital of Noumea. Once on the island visitors are greeted by one of the world’s tallest lighthouses. This 56 metre-high iron lighthouse was constructed in Paris in the early 1860’s and then disassembled and shipped to Amedee, where it was rebuilt in 1865. The innovative design of the lighthouse separates the inner structure from the outer structure to protect the intricate interior from the coercive effects of the humid environment.
Surrounding the island are the enticing waters that make up the World Heritage Site of protected reefs. The clear waters, plentiful marine life and impressive coral reefs must be seen to be believed and can be enjoyed on a glass-bottomed boat or a snorkelling or scuba diving adventure.
There are regular boat tours that serve Amedee Lighthouse Island and these day trips offer not only transportation to the island but many activities as well. On some tours a buffet lunch is served and the day can be spent either enjoying the beach from a lounge chair or enjoying a long list of activities. Lighthouse tours are available and shopping in the gift shop and small island post office is a treat too.
