The Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum is one of Scotland’s most visited sights. Entry to this historic building and culturally significant site is free, offering visitors a valuable glimpse into history. The rare works housed here are varied yet extensive and cover both the natural and cultural history of Scotland and the world.
Over 8,000 items are on display in this modern complex made up of 22 uniquely themed galleries devoted to ‘Life’ on one side and ‘Expression’ on the other. On the ‘Life’ side take a walk through galleries dedicated to Scotland’s First People, Scotland’s Wildlife and nearby a fascinating look at Creatures of the Past. The Ancient Egypt exhibit is filled with rare artefacts and displays. The museum even holds a Spitfire, the famous British WWII fighter which was in those days the backbone of the RAF and now quite rare.
Continue on through the enlightening ‘Expression’ side of the museum and visitors are taken through interesting galleries dealing with human interaction and communication through the arts and design. One of the most popular galleries is ‘The Glasgow Boys’, a stunning collection of paintings in all their various styles and techniques by some of Glasgow’s greatest painters. There is the revealing look at ‘Scottish Identity in Art’, separate galleries taking a closer look at art and design, as well as galleries devoted to French and Dutch art.
The easiest method to reach the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum is by subway. The site is easily accessible and just a 15 minute walk from Partick and 10 minute walk from Charing Cross stations.
