Located in the Boston suburb of Cambridge, Harvard University is one of the most prestigious universities in the world. Established in 1636 it is also the oldest in the country. The Ivy League institution consists of eleven separate academic areas with several campuses located throughout Boston; however the main campus is Cambridge’s Harvard Yard.
There are approximately 21,000 students that attend Harvard and the iconic campus consists of historic buildings and beautiful grounds. Built in 1720, Massachusetts Hall is the oldest building on the campus. The stately colonial building was originally a student dormitory and just some of the famous people to reside here during their student days at Harvard include U.S. President John Adams and American founding fathers and patriots John Hancock and Samuel Adams.
Guided tours of this historic campus are available six days a week. Commencing from the Harvard Information Center in the Holyoke Center Arcade, visitors are given an extensive outdoor look around the Harvard Yard campus led by student guides. The tour offers a revealing look at what it’s like to be a student at the University and provides a look back at its storied past. Public car parks are limited however the campus can be reached on the MBTA subway system. Harvard Square Station is directly across the street from Harvard Yard. Tours depart from the Harvard Information Center also on the other side of Massachusetts Avenue from Harvard Yard between Dunster Street and Holyoke Street.
