Located at the beginning of Denver’s Capitol Hill District in downtown’s Civic Center area, this stunning domed building houses the legislative branches of state government as well as the offices of the state’s governor. Constructed in the early 1890’s this historic Denver landmark features four elegant sides surrounded by inviting landscaped gardens. Topped with an impressive cast iron dome that is decorated with a gold leaf top, the structure is visible from almost anywhere in the city.
This magnificent structure is not only the centre of state government but is also a museum of fine arts. The building itself is a historical masterpiece. The interior is filled with ornate decorative features in gold, marble and onyx. The beautiful inner dome is a masterpiece of elegant Roman design while the lighting in the lobby is enhanced with historic silver sconces along the column lined wings. There are many stained glass windows throughout the building as well as paintings and tapestries.
There are guided tours of the capitol building every week day. These tours depart from the first floor and are offered from 10am to 3pm. In addition to its extensive look at the magnificent building and its features, the tour also gives visitors an excellent overview of the building’s construction, early Colorado history and makes stops in the House and Senate Chambers. Separately, there is also the Mr. Brown’s Attic exhibit area located between the third floor and the dome. It offers a detailed look into the state’s history, capitol construction and the legislative process.
The state capitol building is located on East Colfax Avenue in Downtown Denver. If travelling by car from the north or south, take I-25 and exit at Colfax Avenue. Head east where the capitol will be visible on the right hand side of the road. Metered parking is available on the street and several public car parks are located near by.
