Built in the early 1790’s, this magnificent cathedral is the oldest Catholic cathedral in the U.S. that has been in continual use. Situated across the street from stately Jackson Square and located near some of New Orleans’ most beautiful and historic buildings, this much loved place of worship is a must see site in New Orleans.
Like much of the city before the Great New Orleans Fire of 1788, the first church to stand at this location was of French design and heritage. Completely destroyed in that raging inferno, the Spanish rebuilt a beautiful Spanish Colonial structure and the church was granted Cathedral status in 1793. Due to harsh weather conditions over the centuries and a haphazard remodelling effort in the 1850’s, not all of the original structure remains today. There are however several important elements still present.
The three tall steeples that stand high over the neighbourhood have become beacons of a sort, a landmark that leads the way to one of the most elegant and popular areas of the city. Inside the cathedral, the high arched ceiling is tastefully decorated with paintings and murals and the beautiful alter is an inspired work of art. Richly coloured stained glass windows offer an ornate and decorative beauty.
The cathedral features a gift shop and conducts exceptional organ and classical concerts. Concerts are an excellent way to experience the beauty of the cathedral and concert schedules can be viewed on the cathedral website. Located in the French Quarter, Saint Louis Cathedral overlooks Jackson Square.
