It doesn’t get much clearer, bluer or better than the pristine US Virgin Islands. First sighted by Christopher Columbus, the islands have enjoyed a colourful history, formerly part of the Danish West Indies before becoming a U.S. territory in 1916. Of the 50 dotted islands that form this idyllic archipelago, only three are considered main islands: St. Thomas, St. John and St Croix. Though relatively small in size, all three islands have something unique to offer while still all boasting some of the most beautiful beaches in the world.
St. Thomas
The main island of the main islands, St Thomas is where you’ll find the region’s capital, Charlotte Amelie, as well as much of the restaurants, shops and lavish resorts, creating a cosmopolitan vibe. Despite its larger population (over 51,000), the island is still regarded to have some of the best beaches in the region such as the famed Magen’s Bay Beach.

St. John
The most laidback of the islands, St. John is predominately covered in verdant forests that make up the Virgin Islands National Park. With so much vegetation, the island only has a population of two thousand, offering a true ‘deserted island’ feel with the friendliness of a small town community. While St. John is at times sleepy, the island has a number of scenic spots including Hawkesnest Beach, Honeymoon Beach and Trunk Bay, which is one of the most popular stretches of sand in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

St. Croix
The region’s colourful and cultural past is most evident on St. Croix, the largest island in the territory. Spain, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Denmark, France and the US have all played a part in St. Croix’s culture, producing an incredible tapestry of history and diverse culture which is most evident in the island’s two largest towns, Christiansted and Frederiksted.
Why choose St. Croix: The island is fantastic for observing the region’s culture and history, especially if you visit during a ‘Jump Up’ street festival, a cultural event held four times a year.
