When it comes to where to stay in Cancun, the first thing you should know is the town is split into two: Centro (the central downtown area) and Zona Hotelera, literally the 'hotel zone'. Cancun has been a popular tourist destination since the 1970s, especially with visitors from the United States. As such, there is a huge variety of accommodation in Cancun.

Zona Hotelera is an island connected by bridge to the mainland, surrounding the Nichupte lagoon. This area is home to an array of 3- to 5-star hotels, with something for budget-bound students and luxe-seekers alike. You will find plenty of familar chain hotels here, including Westin, Marriott and Hyatt.
